For years, the car wash industry has promoted automatic car washes as “safe,” “soft touch,” and “paint-friendly” systems. But how safe are they really? At ESOTERIC, we decided to put that claim to the test.
The Experiment
We started with a donor vehicle and did things the right way from the beginning. The paint was fully polished, removing all swirls, scratches, and imperfections so we could establish a true baseline. The surface was restored to a like-new finish, giving us a clean, consistent starting point for the test. From there, we ran the vehicle through an automatic brush car wash every day for 30 days.
At First Glance… It Looks Fine
Standing a few feet away, the car still looked glossy, black, and clean. At a glance, most people would assume the paint was in great condition. That is exactly why so many car owners do not realize what is actually happening to their vehicle over time.
However, once you take a closer look, especially in direct sunlight or with a flashlight, the real condition of the paint becomes obvious.
The Truth: Swirls, Scratches, and Damage Everywhere
After just 30 days, the paint showed heavy swirl marks, micro-scratching across all panels, and a noticeable loss of clarity. This is not minor wear. It is cumulative damage that builds with every wash.
Why It Happens
Even “soft touch” washes rely on physical contact, and that is where the problem begins. The brushes and materials used in these systems collect dirt, sand, and debris from every vehicle that passes through. That contamination is then repeatedly slapped and dragged across your paint. Instead of safely cleaning the surface, it is effectively grinding abrasive particles into it.
The Hidden Risk: The Car Before You
There is another factor that most people never consider. The condition of the car ahead of you matters. If the previous vehicle was covered in mud, gravel, or road debris, that material is picked up by the wash system and transferred directly onto your car. The result is similar to a sandblasting effect as those particles are forced against your paint.
The Worst Area? Down Low
One of the most heavily damaged areas we observed was along the lower doors and rocker panels. “It’s Clean. That’s All I Care About”
For some people, that tradeoff is acceptable. If the goal is simply a quick, convenient clean with minimal effort and no concern for long-term condition, then an automatic wash may seem like a reasonable option.
However, if you own a newer vehicle, a luxury or performance car, or simply take pride in how your car looks, it is important to understand that you are actively degrading your paint every time you use these systems.
The Cost of Convenience
Over time, the damage adds up, and the only way to correct it is through professional paint correction. That process requires time, expertise, and financial investment. What starts as a quick and inexpensive wash can ultimately lead to a much larger cost to restore the finish.
What About Paint Protection Film?
We also tested areas of the vehicle with paint protection film, or PPF, applied. While the film did show some signs of wear, it performed significantly better than the exposed paint, with roughly an 80 percent improvement in resistance to damage.
Another advantage of PPF is its self-healing properties. Light marring can often be reduced or eliminated with heat, whether from sunlight, warm water, or a heat gun.
Important Note
It is important to understand that PPF is not a free pass to use automatic car washes. The brushes can still catch edges or cause damage. However, the comparison clearly highlights how much more vulnerable unprotected paint is.

Ultimately, it comes down to your priorities. Our philosophy is simple:
We would rather have a slightly dirty car with perfect paint than a clean car covered in scratches.
Dirt can always be safely removed. Paint damage requires time and money to fix.
