Mini Restoration: 1970 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda
Some cars come through our studio that stop everyone in their tracks. This 1970 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda was one of those cars.
A long-time ESOTERIC client from out of state recently added this iconic muscle car to his collection. While the car was already exceptional, his goal wasn’t simply to own a Hemi ‘Cuda. He wanted it brought to the same museum-grade standard as the rest of his collection. That meant entrusting it to our team for a comprehensive preservation and restoration process.
Creating the Plan
Every project at ESOTERIC begins with a detailed assessment. Rather than jumping directly into paint correction or cosmetic work, we evaluated every area of the vehicle and developed a step-by-step restoration plan designed to preserve originality while dramatically improving the overall condition.
Dry Ice Cleaning: Preserving Originality
The first phase focused on areas that are often overlooked but make an enormous difference on collector vehicles.
Using our Dry Ice Cleaning process, we meticulously cleaned the engine bay, undercarriage, and wheel wells. Dry Ice Cleaning safely removes decades of grease, dirt, road grime, and contaminants without damaging factory finishes, coatings, or delicate components. It is one of the most effective ways to restore a classic vehicle while preserving its authenticity.
With the wheels removed, each one was completely stripped and professionally restored, returning them to a like-new appearance worthy of the rest of the vehicle.
Interior Restoration
Attention then shifted to the cabin.
The interior was carefully disassembled so every surface could be properly cleaned and restored. Chrome trim pieces were individually hand polished to revive their original brilliance, while the leather received a thorough cleaning and conditioning treatment to restore its appearance and preserve it for years to come.
It’s the type of painstaking work that often goes unnoticed at first glance, but collectively transforms how a vehicle feels when you open the door.
Weeks of Restorative Paint Correction
The most time-intensive portion of the project was the paint.
When the Hemi ‘Cuda arrived, the finish showed years of defects, oxidation, and wear that couldn’t be solved with a simple polishing service. Restoring the paint required weeks of careful correction, refining every panel with patience, precision, and countless hours behind the machine.
The goal wasn’t to chase perfection at the expense of originality. Instead, we focused on preserving as much of the vehicle’s character as possible while dramatically improving clarity, depth, and overall presentation.
A Month in the Studio
In total, this Hemi ‘Cuda spent approximately one month in the ESOTERIC studio.
The finished result is a vehicle that captures the spirit of the day it left the factory while presenting at an extraordinarily high level. Every surface, from the undercarriage to the paint, reflects the care and craftsmanship invested throughout the project.
One of our favorite details remains the original window sticker, a remarkable piece of history that tells the story of this car’s beginnings and serves as a reminder of just how special these vehicles truly are.
